'Smart' implementation of technology for Bhopal

Developing a multifaceted dashboard to enhance the way public services are provided in Bhopal

Client issue

As part of the client’s endeavour to make Bhopal a ‘smart city’, Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Limited (BSCDCL) wanted to change the way public services were being provided, and enhance government-citizen interaction and redressal of citizen grievances. For this purpose, ‘One City One App’ concept aligned to a citizen-centric approach was envisioned by the client.

PwC approach

BSCDCL appointed PwC India to develop and maintain Bhopal Plus, a unified digital platform to enhance effective collaboration between the Government and  citizens. The app serves as an aggregator platform currently offering more than 25+ citizen services (G2C, B2C and emergency services), with essential features like citizen collaboration, sentiment analytics, grievance redressal, broadcast city alerts, live city dashboard.

Impact

Bhopal Plus has emerged as a single unified digital interface between the government and citizens to engage (via discussions, polls, surveys, ideation), avail services (B2C, G2C, tourism, emergency), view city feeds on the city dashboard and grievance redressal (register or track any citizen-related complaint) with auto-escalation. With over 40,000 mobile app downloads and the target to reach two lakh citizens, Bhopal Plus continues to gain outreach among the residents for all city and citizen-related services under one roof and as source of citizen feedback on local governance.

Some popular services offered include electricity bill payment, municipality services (property tax payment, water tax payment, application for birth/death/marriage certificate), smart handyman services to book doorstep service for plumber/electrician/driver/mason/repair, tourist services, around me search service, bus route planner, book donations, sell or donate scrap/waste, city directory, towed vehicle search, emergency SOS services and report an incident, city-related notifications.

Bhopal Plus has won numerous awards, both at national and international levels including the national award for ‘Excellence in Smart Cities’, Asia City Award, Dubai Smart City Award, World Congress Barcelona, CMO Asia Award, Business World Award and the SKOCH award for the top 50 technology projects.
